3M New iPads Sold Over First Weekend, Says Apple
The last Apple tablet launch in March of this year saw the company sell 1.5 million wi-fi only units, which was a record. This time around everyone’s favorite fruit company doubled the number of new iPads sold, with an unknown mix of full-size 9.7-inch fourth generation iPads and the all-new 7.9-inch iPad mini.
Apple has announced fourth generation iPad and iPad mini sales total, wi-fi models only, for the weekend of 3 million units, which doubles the previous first weekend tally.
“Customers around the world love the new iPad mini and fourth generation iPad,” said an anonymous Apple copy writer in the name of Tim Cook. “We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We’re working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand.”
Apple adds that iPad mini demand outstripped supply, which could imply that many if not most of the units sold this weekend were the company’s smaller 7.9-inch tablet. Both products went on sale Friday, November 2 in an unprecedented 34 (advanced economy) nations worldwide.
For what it’s worth, ISI Group (via Bloomberg) guestimates that 2 million of the 3 million iPads sold over the weekend were in fact iPad minis.
In March, Apple announced it sold 3 million wi-fi only and wi-fi + LTE models. Assuming the company maintains the same product mix this time around, another 3 million wi-fi + LTE will be sold over the first weekend of the wi-fi + LTE 4G iPad and iPad mini, which will start shipping on Friday, November 16.
Yep, Apple owns Christmas 2012…
