Apple has announced a worldwide replacement program for the 1st-gen iPod Nano due to a known battery issue that could pose a safety risk to users. The affected models were sold between September ’05 and December ’06 and are reported to have a manufacturing fault that causes overheating of the battery.

For owners of the original iPod Nano, Apple is calling for customers to stop using their devices and are offering a free replacement. The replacement offer is valid worldwide and can be accessed by a new special webpage that asks for users to enter their iPod Nano’s serial number. Replacement iPods will be shipped within about 6 weeks from the date of submission.
