BlackBerry Z10 vs Lumia 920

This is the BlackBerry Z10 vs Lumia 920 comparison. BlackBerry just released the BlackBerry Z10, the first full touchscreen with BB10 OS. The Lumia 920 is the best selling Windows 8 device, so we took this as the comparison unit.

Now that we have two real flagships for both companies fighting for third place, the comparison should be on a level basis. Both phones have similar design, but a completely different outlook on the operating system.

BlackBerry Z10 vs Lumia 920: Design

The Lumia 920 has a 4.5-inch screen, while the BlackBerry Z10 settles with a smaller 4.2-inch screen. Arguments over the perfect sweet spot on phones will forever be debated, and it is personal preference. Both have the same display, 1,280 x 768, but the Lumia 920 has a IPS LCD screen, while the Z10 has just an LCD, the Z10 does have better pixel density, at 356ppi to the Lumia 920’s 332.

Both phones have 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processors, the Lumia 920 is backed by 1GB of RAM, while the Z10 is backed with 2GB. Storage options on the BlackBerry Z10 differ, the phone comes with 16GB but you have the option of upgrading it to 64GB with an expansion card. The Lumia 920 has 32GB of internal storage and no SDslot.

The Lumia 920 is a thicker and heavier smartphone, at 6.5 grams, the BlackBerry Z10 weighs a lot less, 4.8g. Both phones have WiFi, Bluetooth, LTE capabilities and NFC. The Lumia 920 steps in front with their PurView 8.7MP rear camera. Even though the Lumia 920 has a larger battery, testing has found that the BlackBerry Z10 keeps active for longer.

The BlackBerry 10 won most of those battles, but the BlackBerry Z10 vs Lumia 920 race still has a long way to go.

BlackBerry Z10 vs Lumia 920: OS

The two mobile operating systems offer completely different experiences. Windows 8 phone has live tiles and endless scrolling, while BlackBerry 10 has gesture navigation, widgets and icons.

BlackBerry 10 has a great messaging notifications centre that would work well for people with busy social lives. The problem for us is that BlackBerry aggregates all your social content to notifications, which can get a little odd and annoying.

Both phones have a small amount of apps compared to the two big mobile OSes, Android and iOS. Windows 8 phone pushes ahead with 150,000 apps on the service, while BlackBerry 10 has about 70,000.

We found that more of our favourite apps were on Windows 8 phone with a unique interface. On BlackBerry, most of them were ported apps with Android SDKs. Not many apps on BlackBerry 10 are fully customised for the operating system.

You obviously have your own idea on your perfect UI. We would recommend BlackBerry 10 for those that enjoy a lot of notification enhancements and Windows 8 phone to people who like live tiles, scrolling and fluid apps.

BlackBerry Z10 vs Lumia 920: Conclusion

In our view, the BlackBerry Z10 is a better mobile. It is lighter, has better performance and the operating system is pretty good, adding some new features while keeping a lot of the great old BlackBerry ideas.

The BlackBerry 10 store may be a little shabby but with BlackBerry offering rewards to developers, it will be filling up to the point it surpasses Windows 8 phone. This is a battle between the BlackBerry Z10 vs Lumia 920, not BB10 vs Windows 8 phone, we have different ideas about the operating systems.
