We reported Thursday that the HP TouchPad had fallen flat. Now it looks like the technology corporation is dropping the the price of their tablet device significantly. While retailers weren’t supposed to announce the severe reduction until today, numerous retailers threw in the towel late last night. The lowered price became official in the United States earlier today.

Hewlett Packard contacted its affiliates yesterday, confirming the liquidation of TouchPad inventories. As of now, the deducted price is $99 for the 16GB TouchPad and $149 for its 32GB counterpart.

According to PreCentral, HP sent the following message to stocked retailers:

HP will be lowering the price of the TouchPad beginning Saturday 8/20/11. This is the lowest price ever for the TouchPad so please post it as soon as it goes live.

16GB TouchPad- $99; 32GB TouchPad – $149

The price modifications reflect an attempt to clear out TouchPad stocks immediately. Nearly a quarter of a million unsold tablets reportedly remain among retailer shelves.
