Apple’s first media event of 2012 will focus on publishing and iBooks, according to several reports.

Both AllThingsD and TechCrunch have confirmed with Apple sources that Apple will be holding an event sometime later this month – in the Big Apple.

As reported yesterday, the New York City media event will feature Apple Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue. The media event will “not involve any hardware at all and instead will focus on publishing and eBooks rather than iAds. Attendance will also be more publishing industry oriented than consumer focused,” according to an unnamed source.

They also noted that the event will have to do with improvements to the platform, and is not anything “major.”

While the late January event won’t have anything to do with the iPad 3 or AppleTV, it isn’t a stretch to expect some new hardware announcements in the near future.
