A Game of Bombs iPhone Game Review: Blow Us Away

Price: $1.99     Score: 9/10     Category: Games

A Game of Bombs is an iPhone game developed by Ralf Zimmer Zaubersee.de. Featuring 16-bit style retro-graphics and a story-driven dungeon crawler style, this iPhone title is an engrossing game with tons of cool features.

Much like the classic Zelda games, you play an unlikely warrior who must navigate multiple dungeons. You will be assisted on your quest by a persistent fairy (and she’s way less annoying than Navi!) There’s a bloody skeleton guardian on the loose, and he’s coming to kill you and the other prisoners. Think of this game as Bomberman meets Zelda.

You’ll get a time bonus at the end of each stage, along with a bonus for kills and number of bombs used. Reaching the exit quickly and killing all of the monsters with as few bombs as possible will raise your score and earn you up to three stars per mission.

The controls couldn’t be simpler: your left thumb hovers over a virtual, floating D-pad, while you set bombs with you right thumb. The gameplay is perfectly accented by the original soundtrack, which really helps to set the mood. I also appreciated the variety of Power-Ups you can score. These include extra lives, invisibility, teleport, shield, bonus bombs, and super-speed.

In addition to a single-player campaign, you can also embark on a wicked multi-player mode. Face up to four human opponents in epic bomb throwing frenzy, and watch your friends get blown to smithereens!

If you’re longing for the days of your SNES, this retro-inspired gaming title is a blast. A Game of Bombs is fun, exciting, and has tones of cool environments to explore. It might just be the best two bucks you spend this week.

A Game of Bombs is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.1 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.
