Apple iTV: Cupertino Shopping for Ultra HD Panels

Once again, the Asian rumor mill is teasing the long-rumored and lusted for Apple iTV, but don't put one on your Christmas list just yet

Can you picture Apple CEO and supply-chain master Tim Cook, out on the streets of Korea, kicking the tires on ultra-high-definition (Ultra HD) LCD panels? Once again, the Asian rumor mill is teasing the long-rumored and lusted for Apple iTV, but don’t put one on your Christmas list just yet.

Yes, Tapscape has been reporting Apple iTV rumors for months and months

That said, it is believed, no meaningful sources are cited, that Apple is looking to source 55 and/or 65 inch ultra-high-defintion LCD panels for use, one presumes, in the iTV. That said, no mass manufacturing level orders have been placed and product is still in the testing phase.

In other words, it seems highly unlikely that you will be able ogle, let alone touch, one any time soon — no Apple iTV under the Christmas Tree.

For what it’s worth, the source also states that AU Optronics (Taiwan) and Sharp (Japan) are also being mulled as potential suppliers. However, AU won’t start production of large-size panels until next year and Sharp has skirted bankruptcy for several years.

Again, given the timing of this latest Apple iTV rumor, it would seem we will have to wait until 2014 for real product hanging on the wall at an Apple Store or Best Buy near you…

What’s your take?
