AI is very focused specifically on assisting us and fulfilling our requirements. It can be a great tool, but the thing we have to understand is whether it can understand personality or not. And it’s only going to differ based on the person and situations at hand. Normally, AI appears to be very powerful, and using it can be great. But the reality is that most of us don’t know whether AI understands our personality, or it’s just recognizing patterns and producing a convincing imitation of understanding us.
What Do We Define As Personality?
Contents
The truth is that personality is a stable pattern which shows how a person feels, thinks, behaves and reacts. A lot of the time, personality boils down to the openness to experience, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and neuroticism. And as we know, different people will behave in different ways. Some people will focus a lot on being socially confident, while others will focus less on social interaction and more on accumulating knowledge.
The thing we have to understand is that personality is not something labeled to us at birth. Instead, this gets shaped by things like temperament, choice, relationship, environment, memory, culture and how we interact with others. Plus, this is mostly hidden, not to mention there are lots of times when people just don’t know how to react, which can bring its fair share of challenges.
That being said, personality can be very complex. It’s the reason why a lot of people don’t think AI can mimic, nor can it fully understand the personality of a person. So yes, when we see claims that AI has a certain personality, it’s the type of stuff that we see with a grain of salt. Understanding that and figuring out how to approach things and how to go next, that can lead to a massive difference in the long term.
What Can AI Infer?
AI doesn’t have to read your mind in order to guess your personality. Instead humans are offering certain behavioral clues that AI can pick up, and in those cases we can end up allowing it to learn more about us.
For example, we use a certain type of language, and that can reveal various recurring tendencies. The words we use, the subjects we like, the emotional tone of messages and the amount we write, that is very important. AI is going to compare and study these signals with patterns that it learned from processing tons of human data. So yes, it can give a pretty accurate display of someone’s personality. Will it be a perfect comprehension of personality? Not really, but it does get pretty close, and it’s going to be something very spectacular and quite unique in its own right.
The process is called personality inference, and it’s less like a therapist understanding the patient, it’s more like a statistician assessing things and sharing an estimate. The approach can work and AI is able to understand certain things. Yet it also comes with certain limitations, as you can imagine. In this situation the most important thing is to identify stuff, narrow everything down, and then be realistic with the AI when sharing things. You can’t receive an accurate personality read from the AI if you continue shifting ideas and you’re not honest. But with honesty and adequate information sharing, you can outline your personality in a way that feels way more cohesive and consistent.
Pattern Recognition Doesn’t Automatically Lead to Personal Understanding
Naturally, AI focuses on understanding patterns and then using those signals to figure out what kind of personality you fit, based on the data provided. However, AI is not going to share personal understanding. It still relies on data and algorithms in order to deliver the best information and guidelines. That’s the reason why we have to understand, just because AI is recognizing patterns, that doesn’t mean it automatically knows our entire personality. And it’s only one of those things that will get better in the long term.
AI will approximate parts of the process with language. It can see clues, ask questions, and it can retrieve its memory from previous conversations. But it doesn’t experience the stakes of a relationship, nor can it fully comprehend what a relationship truly is. It’s something very hard to quantify in a language that AI understands, hence the reason why this can be extremely complex and difficult as well.
Does AI seem to know us well when we are interacting with it? Absolutely, because it learns and it continually adapts based on the conversations we have. But it doesn’t fully know our personality, nor can it understand it properly. At least not yet anyway. With advances in AI tech, we are getting closer and closer to a time when AI might very well think like a human or even surpass us. But that is not the time we are living in now. Will it be sooner rather than later? Of course, yet only time can tell!
It’s clear that AI is going to change the way we communicate, work and behave. The future is evolving, and we are evolving with it. But the most important thing at this time is figuring things out, narrowing down what you can pursue, and pushing the limits to the best of your capabilities. That’s the thing, AI has the potential to change our lives and improve, but it can’t fully comprehend our personality. It’s becoming better and better at that, yet even the way it’s now, it does manage to connect with us in ways that we barely and rarely expect. So if it can do that now, we can only imagine how much better it can become in the future.
