AOL Launches ‘PLAY’ Music Service

AOL, the company behind popular tech sites Engadget and Joystiq, has launched a new iOS music application. AOL described their latest app, dubbed PLAY, as “an application that lets you share musical moments with friends.”

While some services, like Spotify, offer subscription based music streaming, PLAY offers a free catalog of popular tunes for playback at any time. AOL was quick to point out that PLAY is capable of much, much more.

PLAY is an application that lets you share musical moments with friends and discover great new music. PLAY not only let’s you listen to your own music on your device, it also let’s you stream SHOUTcast radio, CD Listening Party, MP3 of the day, and more, all for FREE!

Besides content offered by AOL, users can additionally access music downloaded via iTunes, along with radio stations, through the PLAY interface.

While PLAY looks and works great, its success is going to be based on how users adopt the application. AOL’s music endeavor is available from the App Store free of charge.
