Dragon Age III Inquisition Bioware

Big news for RPG gaming fans everywhere — the third game in Bioware’s critically-successful Dragon Age franchise is now official and will be known as…

The announcement for Dragon Age III: Inquisition was made via an “open letter” from executive producer Mark Darrah posted on the Dragon Age website. In the letter, he talks about his experience with Bioware and his passion for RPGs. It’s an interesting read and gives a very personal account of what’s it like to work with an awesome company that’s also behind some equally awesome games.

For fans thirsty for more information on the upcoming Dragon Age game, the letter is a godsend because in it, Darrah confirms some key details about the upcoming game:

  • The next game will be called Dragon Age III: Inquisition.
  • We won’t be talking about the story of the game today. Though you can make some guesses from the title.
  • This game is being made by a lot of the same team that has been working on Dragon Age since Dragon Age: Origins. It’s composed of both experienced BioWare veterans and talented new developers.
  • We are working on a new engine which we believe will allow us to deliver a more expansive world, better visuals, more reactivity to player choices, and more customization. At PAX East, we talked about armor and followers… Yeah, that kind of customization. We’ve started with Frostbite 2 from DICE as a foundation to accomplish this.

While Dragon Age III: Inquisition was pretty much a lock considering the overall success of its predecessors, it’s nice to know that things are now official and that it’s gotten a spiffy subtitle. “Inquisition” suggests that the ending of Dragon Age II is exactly where we’ll be picking up and it should be interesting to see which characters will make a comeback and how your previous saves will be affecting the story.

And while Bioware’s approval rating may not be as high at the moment with RPG fans, especially after the debacle with Mass Effect 3’s ending and the less-than-stellar performance of Dragon Age II, one thing’s for certain — Dragon Age III: Inqusition will be one very pretty game as it will be using the same engine as Battlefield 3.
