One of my all-time favorite Japanese comics is a one-shot called Oh My Goddess!: It’s Lonely at the Top. The whole comic revolves around Keiichi and his attempt to win a brutal motorbike Hill Climb race, and it’s really exciting! Playing King of the Hill on my iPhone brought back fond memories of reading that comic as a kid.
One of the things I like best about King of the Hill is the level of difficulty. I always feel like the best car and cycle games are the ones that mimic the true difficulty of the driving experience. While it might infuriate less-patient players, I really like how hard it is to master the controls of this hill-climber.
You need to tilt your phone left or right to adjust your rider’s position on the bike. You can run your thumbs up the right-hand bar to increase the throttle, while the left thumb bar adjusts your break. It’s a lot to master, but that’s part of the fun!
While the graphics could have a little more polish to them, they’re still quite good. And with so many different game modes to choose from, there’s a lot to like here. You can do a “100m dash” on easy, medium, or hard modes…or push your skill to the limit with unlimited runs. There’s also the ability to customize your ride for better performance.
If you like games with realistic physics, challenging controls, and addictive gameplay, treat yourself to this inexpensive game. It may be cheap in terms of price, but it is not cheap in terms of its quality.
