You play as the ghost of Herman. If you can achieve enough “Soular” power, you can conceivably grant Herman a chance for another day among the living! You are given a total of 20 nights for you to clear all three levels.
The controls are quite simple to master, meaning that you can focus your energies on exploring this spooky little town and its unique architecture. It is pretty much impossible to get lost: the game is great at guiding your actions and keeping you moving towards your ultimate goals.
Opinions are likely to be divided over the music. Some players would likely prefer it if the game had more sinister, truly atmospheric music. Others will probably enjoy the game’s somewhat cheesy, stereotypical “spooky” sound choices.
The developer’s note: “As the Spookening pushes the hardware to the limit it will only run smoothly on iPhone 4S and 5 or iPad 4.” Another few annoyances will present themselves as you play. First of all, the game doesn’t auto-orient itself in landscape orientation. Another problem: the app is unstable and prone to crashing. Nobody wants a game that crashes in the middle of things!
However, despite these problems, the overall gameplay experience of The Spookening is enjoyable. This game is worth checking out if you like fun or spooky titles.
