Swarm of the Dead iPhone Game Review: Zombie Strategy FTW!

Swarm of the Dead is an iPhone game developed by OrionArts. If you love zombie games, but prefer playing on the side of the undead instead of the living, then this epic real-time zombie strategy game is definitely for you!

Swarm of the Dead lets players become a “Zombie Commander.” Your goal is simple: attack and thwart the efforts of a researcher and a group of human survivors trying to find a cure from the zombie plague.

In Swarm of the Dead, you can command nine types of zombies (with a tenth type unlocked when you play with friends.) Zombie types include Crawlers, Walkers, Spitters, and Manglers, each of which has unique abilities.

The game is totally free to play, though you can give yourself an edge by making some in-app purchases. You can disable this feature if you don’t want to avoid temptation!

The graphics are totally awesome, and there are both normal and hard modes that you can try out. The comic cutscenes and fun soundtrack really help to set the mood, and draw you into the game. One feature I really liked was the one-tap “REC” button, to record video on your game in action!

Some strategy games bore me to tears, because they are just too slow-paced. In the case of Swarm of the Dead, however, I think there is a really good balance between the strategy elements and the combat portions of the game.

With 100 levels and three bonus stages to master, this expansive game is a great freebie. Whether you’re looking for a Halloween-themed game to enjoy this week, or some year-round zombie goodness, Swarm of the Dead has got you covered! It’s fun, it’s funny, and it should be a fundamental part of your mobile gaming regimen.

Swarm of the Dead requires iOS 4.3 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.
