Sony Sells Over 7 Millions PS4s, Struggles To Meet Demand

Sony is quite pleased with how well its PS4 game console has been selling since it was released last year. In a sales update Wednesday, Sony social media manager Sid Shuman announced that the company had sold 7 million PS4s globally as well as 20.5 million copies of PS4 software.

Sony Sells Over 7 Millions PS4s, Struggles To Meet DemandThe sales numbers are fairly recent as Shuman provided figures as of April 6.

Hi guys! I’ve got a quick update to share with you. Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. just announced that PS4 has cumulatively sold through more than 7.0 million units globally as of April 6th, 2014. PS4 software sales are another bright spot, with more than 20.5 million copies sold at retail and PlayStation Store worldwide as of April 13th, 2014. – Shuman

Last month Sony announced that it had reached the six million unit sales mark, which means that in just one month, it was able to bring in another one million.

Sony’s PS4 has been outselling the Xbox One since they were both released and while the cheaper price tag may be playing a part in that, a lot of gamers seem to prefer Sony’s console this time around.

Almost every single month, Sony has updated its sales figures, showing around 1 million additional unit sales. Microsoft is undoubtedly wishing that it was able to report the same sort of statistics.

On behalf of the entire global team at PlayStation, I want to thank you for your unprecedented support and for making PS4 your next-generation console of choice. We couldn’t have done this without you! And please keep the feedback coming: we are listening. – Shuman

Sales have been strong since February, when the company launched its latest game console in Japan, where the gaming market is particularly large. Since the initial launch, the PS4 has been made available in 72 countries.

In Shuman’s short blog post, it was also noted that Sony will be providing some sort of update regarding the PS4’s software in the near future.

Question – Do you prefer the PS4 or the Xbox One?

Summary: Sony has sold 7 million PS4s since launch, according to a recent update. The Xbox One continues to trail behind, just as it has been since they were both released.
