Brandnew Boy iPhone Game Review

Price: $0.99     Score: 8.5/10    Category: Games

For a limited time only, Brandnew Boy is only 99 cents at the App Store. That means if you haven’t tried out this offering from Oozoo, Inc. yet, there’s no better time to start slashing at eggs and chatting with self-aware televisions.

Chances are that if you like RPGs, you’ve thought about purchasing this iPhone game. After all, it’s been the number one RPG in 10 countries to date, and contains a whopping 40 stages of slash-’em-up action.

The graphics are lovely, smooth, and have that certain something that makes a character charming and engaging. The controls couldn’t be simpler, with just a tap or two needed to move you around the screen and put you into attack mode. And that minimal, simplistic control style makes it easy to see the characters and the game environment.

Brandnew Boy is built on the Unreal Engine 3, which provides silky smooth gameplay and a truly immersive experience. While it may not have the appeal of other iPhone games built on the same engine (due in part to a slow-starting story), it delivers the same quality gaming experience fans have come to expect from an Unreal Engine product.

You play as “Rookie,” an adorable anime-style character with amnesia (and a pretty rad set of customizables.) Hounded by a talking TV, you set out into the world  to get some answers and lay down a beating on all kinds of wacky and weird monsters. As you progress, there’s a truly satisfying build to your weapons and abilities that makes the iPhone game addicting.

As with any RPG, you get what you put into the game: the more you play, the more invested you’ll become and the more fun abilities you can unlock. If you’re an RPG fan or a gamer who loves slashing action, definitely check this one out.

Brandnew Boy is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.
