Listen Up! Lite is an iPhone game developed by AppSLAW. With this game (billed as “The ultimate audio-based social challenge!”), you can play a guessing game that’s based on identifying sound clips.
As with most other turn-based social games out there, you start a game by either inviting Facebook friends, searching out specific “Listen Up!” gamer tags, finding a random opponent, or inviting players via email.
Next, you pick a word from the list (with different levels of difficulty), and record a sound clip that best exemplifies the spirit of that word. For example, you might say “Ring, ring!” into your phone as a hint for the word “telephone.”
The harder the word is, the more “microphones” you get as a reward. You have just five seconds to record your sound, so you have to be clever. The harder the word, the more mics are won, giving players power to unlock very funny visual aids to use as clues.
The tutorial is a little too slow-paced, and forces you to actually do things like delete a recorded audio track, when anyone who’s ever used an iPhone can figure out that you just need to hit the “trash” button to do so. The ads are a bit annoying as well.
Overall, however, Listen Up! Lite is a pretty solid iPhone game. I really like the added touch of the “Susie Soundmaster” option. With this, players can nominate their favorite sound bites from within the app to win weekly contests. It really adds a sense of community to a game that could so easily have no sense of community whatsoever.
If you want a break from Words with Friends, this turn-based social game is way more creative and far more entertaining.
