It’s not uncommon to hear about athletes being banned from drinking or smoking during a big tournament, but Twitter?

World Cup players on Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Holland, Germany, Argentina and England teams are along with sex and alcohol forbidden from using social media of any kind during this years World Cup. The ban includes sites such as Twitter and Facebook as well as other social media applications such as FourSquare.

The idea behind the ban is that it will help keep players focused on the game, rather than what is going on in cyberspace.  US football players have a similar, yet considerably less strict ban, which keeps them from using social networking sites an hour and a half before and after each game.

What do you think about the ban? Do you think players should be allowed to use social media and interact with fans?
