This first chapter is part of a larger narrative, with the next two chapters consisting of Gillo and Greer and All One Wants. What Tom McGrane is trying to do with The Damned Meanderers is present a monthly multimedia comic book with sound effects, ambient sounds, and a cinema soundtrack to enhance the reading experience.
Here’s the synopsis for Chapter 1: “After learning the war they have been fighting was never theirs to fight, six soldiers decide to set out for home. Unfortunately, that becomes an entirely new battle. Not only are the fugitives confronting various forms of land, danger and rogues, but also the six very different souls within their group. This is their story…”
It’s an intriguing premise, and I was excited to read this tale. The homecoming of soldiers is a great trope, and some of the best works of art over time are inspired by that homeward journey. From “The Odyssey” to modern tales like “Saving Private Ryan,” there’s nothing quite like seeing a soldier prepare to return home, and think about starting a new chapter in their life.
The storytelling in first chapter of The Damned Meanderers is engaging, engrossing, and wonderfully atmospheric. Still, as impressive as these titles are, I can’t but wish that I was getting a bit more bang for my buck. $3.99 is pretty fair, but I do wish each chapter was a bit longer. Still, I suggest you check out the series for yourself.
