Thomas is an analog-style movie camera iPhone app. It was developed by Alfonso Bozzelli. If you like the retro look, you can use Thomas to film your very own low-fi analog movies.
When Thomas says that it’s trying to make retro-style videos, they mean it. Most notably, these videos don’t have any audio attached to them (like classic home movies.)
Thomas shoots videos at 3 frames per second with no audio. If you want audio, this probably isn’t the app for you. If you like the “silent movie effect,” however, this app has great artistic merit.
The design of this app is simply exquisite. Thomas has a very sleek, modern, and minimal look, which I really found myself responding to.
The controls in Thomas are equally elegant. Simply hold your finger on the screen to record video, and remove your finger to stop/pause.
You will likely need to make an in-app purchase of $1.99 to unlock the basic filter pack if you want to get the most out of this app and get the best variety of filters. If you want to see the filters in action, check out this demo video.
While Thomas does only have nine effects at present, this is an app that is definitely all about quality, not quantity. Some users may want more filter effects to peruse (and it does seem likely that at least a few more effects will be added at some future date.) However, the current selection really is more than adequate.
Now on Version 1.3 (which included some bug fixes to deal with the crashing problem that earlier versions of the app had), Thomas is a lovely little “analog” filmmaking tool. If you want today’s family videos to have the charm of home movies from the 60s, 70s, or 80s, Thomas is well worth checking out!
