While the audio quality is fairly decent, I’d argue that Voice Recorder HD is more suited as a dictaphone for journalists, executives, and other professionals than as a mobile recording studio for musicians. That being said, the audio quality is still pretty impressive.
If you wanted to use this as a mobile recording rig, the developers of Voice Recorder HD suggest that you can get better clarity by using an external mic to record long distance sound, such as iRig.
The interface is excellent: it has been designed intuitively, making it easy to navigate. The recorder screen has two buttons (STOP and RECORD), plus a timer, making it very streamlined.
Once you’ve finished recording (in .wav format, in case you were wondering), the file is stored on the Voice Memos page of the Voice Recorder HD app, where they are listed in chronological order. From there, you can label them as fits (for example, as a class lecture, interview, idea, or any other custom heading.)
You can also add a text memo along with the audio file, making it the perfect spot to include contact info for an interviewee or a work colleague you want to interface with.
Voice Recorder HD also lets you upload your audio memos to SoundCloud, Dropbox, e-mail (up to 10 MB), or other audio supported apps already on your iPhone. You can also adjust the sound quality to best suit your needs (Low:8KHz, Medium:22.05KHz, Heigh:44.1KHz)
The one thing I didn’t like about Voice Recorder HD was the fact that I couldn’t figure out how to change the default name on the audio track. It’s a non-issue because of the labels and timestamps, but it would still make navigating a long list of files much easier.
Thanks to a great user interface that removes the clutter of other recording apps, this stripped down audio app is a great solution for students or workers who find themselves in need of a simple voice recording option in their pocket.
Voice Recorder HDis compatible with iPhone, iPod touch (2nd generation), iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later.
