Google has today announced Google Drive, the company’s much-anticipated cloud-based storage service. Google are offering users 5GB of free storage for use with Google Docs and other Google apps.

Today, we’re introducing Google Drive—a place where you can create, share, collaborate, and keep all of your stuff. Whether you’re working with a friend on a joint research project, planning a wedding with your fiancé or tracking a budget with roommates, you can do it in Drive. You can upload and access all of your files, including videos, photos, Google Docs, PDFs and beyond.

Google Drive is going up against some big names in cloud storage, with competition coming from Apple’s iCloud, DropBox and Microsoft’s new SkyDrive service.

“Now access your files, even the big ones, from wherever you are. Share them with whomever you want, and edit them together in real time”
